About Dr Mamdoo

Thirteen years at one of Africa’s busiest gastroenterology units

Dr Razinah Mamdoo is a full-time physician in the medical gastroenterology department at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Soweto, the unit where gastroenterology training for doctors from across sub-Saharan Africa began. She did her internship at “Bara”, and has since built 13 years of expertise in gastrointestinal medicine there.

Her particular skills are gastroscopy, video capsule endoscopy reporting and the day-to-day management of gastrointestinal conditions. She runs the unit’s gastroscopy suite, which handles more than 350 cases a month, and has taken part in the unit’s research programmes.

In January 2026 she registered a private practice at Crownmed Day Hospital in Selby, set up mainly to serve patients who can’t afford private care. On weekends, these patients are seen and scoped free of charge in a private facility with first-class amenities.

Outside the endoscopy room she is a mother of three who cares about health, fitness and peace of mind. She believes good gut health comes from informed choices, effective exercise and a balanced lifestyle, and she uses her platform to raise awareness and funds for medical NPOs, humanitarian organisations and charities.

Services

What Dr Mamdoo can help with

Procedures are done as day cases at Crownmed Day Hospital: you go home the same day.

Gastroscopy

A thin, flexible camera is passed through the mouth to look at the oesophagus (food pipe), stomach and first part of the small bowel. It’s the main test for reflux damage, ulcers, inflammation, bleeding and swallowing problems, and biopsies can be taken during the same procedure. Usually done under light sedation and over in about 10 to 15 minutes.

What to expect →

Digestive health consultations

Assessment and treatment for heartburn, indigestion, stomach pain, nausea, bloating and changes in bowel habit, with a clear plan for tests and next steps.

H. pylori & ulcers

H. pylori is a common stomach infection and a leading cause of ulcers. Dr Mamdoo has published research on it, and can test for it, treat it and check that it has cleared.

Reflux & swallowing problems

Ongoing heartburn, acid coming up, food sticking or pain on swallowing are worth investigating, especially if over-the-counter medicine isn’t helping.

Video capsule endoscopy reporting

A swallowed camera capsule photographs the small bowel. Dr Mamdoo reports on capsule studies, for example when looking for the cause of hidden bleeding or anaemia. Confirm if offered privately

Gut health & lifestyle

Practical, evidence-based guidance on eating, exercise and habits that support long-term digestive health once the diagnosis is clear.

Community care

Private-quality scoping for patients who can’t afford private care

Dr Mamdoo’s practice at Crownmed was set up mainly for patients who need a gastroscopy but can’t afford private healthcare. On weekends, these patients are seen and scoped free of charge, in a private day hospital with first-class amenities, rather than waiting months on a public list.

  • Seen by the doctor who runs Bara’s gastroscopy suite
  • Private day-hospital setting, home the same day
  • Affordable and welfare-funded options

Your gastroscopy

What to expect on the day

You’ll get exact instructions when you book. This is the usual pattern.

  1. Before

Nothing to eat for about six hours beforehand; small sips of water may be allowed until a few hours before. Tell us about blood thinners, diabetes medication and allergies when you book.

  2. Arrive

Check in at Crownmed Day Hospital, 22 Bonanza Street, Selby. Bring your ID, medical aid card (if you have one), referral letter and a list of your medicines.

  3. The procedure

A throat spray and light sedation keep you comfortable. The scope itself usually takes 10 to 15 minutes, and biopsies are painless.

  4. After

You rest while the sedation wears off, and Dr Mamdoo explains what she found. Have someone drive you home, and don’t drive or sign important documents for the rest of the day.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need a referral?

A referral letter from your GP or clinic helps, especially if you’d like to be considered for the community care programme, but call 082 076 2876 and we’ll tell you what you need.

Does a gastroscopy hurt?

Most people find it much easier than they expected. Your throat is numbed with a spray and you’re given light sedation, so many patients remember very little of it. You may have a mild sore throat or feel bloated for a few hours afterwards.

Can I drive myself home?

No. After sedation you shouldn’t drive, operate machinery or make important decisions for the rest of the day, so please arrange for someone to collect you.

Do you accept medical aid?

To be confirmed with the practice. Please call the bookings line to check your scheme and any costs before your appointment.

Who qualifies for free weekend scoping?

The programme is for patients who can’t afford private care. Call 082 076 2876 to find out whether you qualify and when the next weekend list is.

When will I get my results?

Dr Mamdoo explains what she saw straight after the procedure. If biopsies are taken, the laboratory results usually follow within about a week, and she’ll let you know the plan.
